The team of John Brabourne and Co., having produced the movie versions of Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express” and “Death on the Nile”, brought back Peter Ustinov’s engaging Hercule Poirot in this fun, campy offering. The star-studded cast (Maggie Smith, Diana Rigg, James Mason, Roddy McDowall et al.) seem to be having the time of their lives. Anthony Shaffer’s script sparkles, the sets and costumes are splendid, and John Lanchbery’s gorgeous arrangements of Cole Porter classics divert at these few points when the action slows. The movie, made in 1981, holds up well; even if you know whodunit and how, there are set pieces and witty ripostes throughout to keep you amused.

My only cavil is that the recap at the end, when Poirot reveals all, moves slowly, but that’s characteristic of sleuth movies and there’s probably no remedy.

Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot is challenged to locate a missing jewel. To do this he must go to a small island. Guess who has a tendency to get seasick? He requests his fee in guineas (a guinea is equivalent of 21 shillings.)

Naturally someone(s) is unexplainably dispatched. Of course the island is loaded with the usual suspects. Everyone has a motive and an alibi. By this time you have completely forgotten how the movie started.

Speaking about the movie, they pulled out all the stops with expensive locations, costumes, and actors. And Cole Porter tossed in for ambiance. There was even an appearance of Roddy McDowall who played Alan “Mollymauk” Musgrave in “Lord Love A Duck” (1966)

The kingdom of Clamp has been extremely well known in Japan. (I am not so sure if it is also well known internationally.) It is true that its present works make changes from its previous production. However, I doubt anyone, especially fans of Clamp would forget the original character designs (pointy eye lashes, facial profile, etc) in the early 90s (late 80s – early 90s). Clamp’s reputation is not something that is granted. Its early animation developed a new trend of animation in Japan. Its fairy tales, characters’ design are unforgettable. Talking about its early production, these 3 lovely and smart `’ (little rich boys) are one of the icons in Clamp anime. It is very interesting to watch. The stories are relaxing. The characters are in children’s bodies but with adults’ characteristic. In addition, the production design is beautifully made.

Death Note is based on the popular manga (Japanese Comic) and loosely based on the anime series of the same name. I’ve never read the comic but I saw the anime series on imported dvd, and I have to say the Live-action version, Death Note and Death Note the Last Name does the franchise justice. This series is one of the best I’ve seen from Japan in a while. I will review both films because one movie while phenomenal and definitely can stand on its own, the story is very much linked together.

Plot synopsis loosely derived from the DVD cover:

In “Death Note”, Tatsuya Fujiwara plays the role of Light Yagami, a genius law student who picks up the “Death Note” and uses it to “cleanse” the world of evil. Upholding justice obsesses him and he envisions himself as a god in the crime-less utopia he plans to create. As criminals continue to die in unexplainable ways, people start saying that it must be the work of a “messiah”, of whom they call Kira. L, played by Kenichi Matsuyama, works for the International Criminal Police Organisation (ICPO) and is deployed to solve the Kira mystery.

In “Death Note 2: The Last Name”, the story continues as Light devises a plan to be part of the Kira Task Force headed by L. While the two geniuses are busy dealing with each other, a second Death Note drops into Earth. Rem, a Shinigami (Death God), brings the second notebook and Misa Amane (Erika Toda), a pop star and Kira worshipper, comes into possession of it. Becoming a Kira herself, she accepts the offer to have the ‘Eyes of the Death’ which will enable her to know the name of any person without being told.

As Misa and Light work together to get rid of L, a new character, Kiyomi Takada (Nana Katase), comes into the picture as the third Kira. With the disclosure of the new rules of the Death Note, the mystery becomes more complex, with a satisfying storyline and a completely unpredictable finale.

That’s just scratching the surface, as Light continues to experiment with the capabilities of the book, as well as to internalize all the rules to call upon some serious manipulation of the rules to work to his advantage. Power corrupts absolutely–What would a human being do with the power of life and death?

Man has no right to play GOD.

This film reflects why imperfect human beings should not hold such power, men are fallible, vulnerable to desires and vanity. You see an almost accurate telling of one person’s corruption and descent into madness, and how a genius can seem stupid. It also tries to reflect on the different views of a society and how a small “nudge” in the wrong (or right)direction by a government or individual can affect how things are seen by its people. The issue of capital punishment is also explored in both films. Some may say that the film also contains a social commentary.

The battle of wits between L and Light Yagami is definitely one to watch; as the two geniuses struggle to stay one step ahead of the other. It is rather curious that such a complex match-up of intelligence also proves that the two are actually two sides of the same coin but on opposing sides. L is pretty much a charming if eccentric presence as the sugar-loving detective. I didn’t know that sugar does provide energy for the brain until I observed him gulp down significant amounts of candy and dessert. The thing that proves Light Yagami quite dangerous is the fact that he believes that he is doing the right thing and whatever steps he has taken may seem cruel, it is justified. When one believes his cause his just, one becomes more determined than the common opponent.

Death Note is smart storytelling, the plot twists and thrills are non-stop, each scene has a relevance to the next. The thrills/suspense are more CEREBRAL than visual with a very solid structure. The direction by Shusuke Kaneko effectively promotes intense energy and never lets up on the suspense, further accentuated by its twists and turns. Upon watching these two films, keep in mind that this is Fantasy-horror, the “Death Gods” have that manga/anime look, they may have that cartoonish look, but they look almost exactly like in the comic. Story-wise, it is pretty intense, it is genre-busting, battle of wits thriller that involves the supernatural world. (Although some anime films do surpass other films in terms of plot) I will stop here, since with this film, the less you know, the better it would be.

Death Note 1 & 2 really caught my attention. This is intelligent storytelling and for the most part, kept me on the edge of my seat. It made a good transition from comic to film. The two dvds are very much worth every penny!

These two films have been selected at the 2007 New York film festival.

“Death Note” was a much better flick than I was expecting. It was a huge hit in Japan, and because I had never read the original manga, I had avoided it thinking I wouldn’t get the entire story. My loss, as it turns out.

The cat-and-mouse detective game mixed with the fantasy elements of the gods of death and their magical books makes for an interesting story. The two main characters, “L” and Light, are an intense duo, and like the best of this genre of film it is hard to decide who to root for. Light (Tatsuya Fujiwara, “Battle Royale”), known by the general public as the hero/murderer “Killer”, is the holder of the Death Note, and has the power to kill anyone on Earth just by writing their name. A hardcore and brilliant student of criminal justice, he uses his power to erase the vermin of the world, serial killers, child rapists and gangsters. For the most part, his actions are praised, but he is still a murderer in the eyes of the law, and needs to be brought down. On his side is the Ryuuk, a Japanese god of death who gave Light the Death Note in order to keep himself entertained. Hunting him down in “L” (Ken’ichi Matsuyama, “Linda,Linda, Linda”), a young, oddball genius with a penchant for sweets who keeps his name hidden in order to protect himself from the powers of the Death Note. L hunts Light, and Light hunts L, and it is never clear who is the person a step ahead, and who is the fly falling into the web.

Director Shusuke Kaneko, who cut his teeth on Godzilla, Gamera and Ultraman flicks, managed to keep the story close enough to the manga to please the fans while making it complete enough that newcomers don’t feel that they are only getting a part of the picture. The CG animated Ryuuk stands out at first, but soon becomes a natural part of the storyline, and Kaneko’s familiarity with the special effects learned from the monster films did him good service. All of the actors do a great job, particularly Fujiwara and Matsuyama as L and Light, who carry the movie on the strength of their performances.

“Death Note” was a great enough film that it had me running to pick up the sequel, which actually makes a single film “Kill Bill”-style, as well as checking out the manga and the spin-off flick “L:Change the World”. All of them are high quality, and all of them are recommended.

“Enchanted” begins in an animated land named Andalasia, with a young girl named Giselle (Amy Adams) meeting the prince of her dreams, Prince Edward (James Marsden) and preparing to live happily ever after. Andalasia, and large parts of the movie are based on a combination of the Disney worlds of Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, so of course you can count on the appearance of an evil stepmother-wicked witch (Susan Sarandon) to put an end to all the wretched happiness.

As soon as Giselle comes within striking distance of the castle on her wedding day, the witch (disguised as an old hag) zaps her into another world where “happily ever afters” and true love apparently haven’t existed for years – present day Manhattan.

Switching to live action, Giselle tries to understand the New York state of mind, and falls into the arms of a McDreamy guy named Robert (I don’t have to tell you who the actor is, now do I?) While Giselle begins getting acclimatized and introduces herself to the local wildlife, a rescue party from Andalasia also uses the Manhattan transfer, and soon the streets of New York are stormed by a CGI chipmunk, a prince in search of his missing damsel, and a henchman with a funny accent (Timothy Spall).

If you’re a fan of fairy tales, and in particular Disney tales, you’ll love the little touches like poisoned apples in the Big Apple, Beauty & the Beast ballroom dancing and glass slippers, but this updated magical, musical, funny fairy tale will be a treat for the whole family.

A definite “YES” for family entertainment, and one you probably should buy when it comes out on DVD. Rated: 4.5 stars

What would happen when an animated fairy tale princess found herself in our physical world? This question is the basis of “Enchanted,” a Disney film addressing the fairy tale clichés so effectively that it’s practically a parody. The film begins in the animated world of Andalasia with the opening of a storybook; a voiceover narration says the obligatory, “Once upon a time …” before we’re introduced to Giselle (voiced by Amy Adams), a peasant girl who, of course, lives in a quaint little cottage in the middle of the woods. As you might expect, she thinks of nothing but finding her one true love, going so far as to make a princely mannequin while singing brightly. To top that off, she’s friendly with practically every creature inhabiting the forest, and they all pay her a visit as she sings. When she’s almost eaten by a troll, the dashing Prince Edward (voiced by James Marsden) rescues her, and the two immediately decide to get married.

But Edward’s evil stepmother–Queen Narissa (voiced by Susan Sarandon)–refuses to give up the throne and vows to stop the wedding. Disguised as an old hag, she lures Giselle to a magical well and pushes her in. The well is actually a kind of inter-dimensional portal between Andalasia and our world, and according to Narissa, it’s a place, “where there are no happily ever afters.” Giselle emerges from a manhole in the middle of New York City. Amidst the confusing, frightening hustle and bustle of everyday living–in which people are rude, conniving, and fast-paced–a now-live action Giselle bumps into divorce attorney Robert Philip (Patrick Dempsey) and his six-year-old daughter, Morgan (Rachel Covey). They take her in, although Robert is more than a little anxious about the situation; from his point of view, a delusional woman in a fluffy white princess dress is roaming the streets of Manhattan. Morgan, on the other hand, is thrilled, believing that a real princess has entered her life.

As she prances around with all the grace and joy of the perpetually perky, Giselle gradually learns a few important things: (1) people in the real world don’t break out into song for no apparent reason; (2) people don’t like it when their curtains are used to make a dress; (3) it isn’t appropriate to call forth birds, rats, and roaches to help tidy up; and (4) love is not as simple as meeting one day and marrying the next. Or is it? She and Robert share interesting conversations on the nature of relationships, his stance being that they’re incredibly complicated, her stance being that they don’t have to be. Considering his failed marriage and his new relationship with a woman named Nancy (Idina Menzel), it’s easy to see where he’s coming from. Real life is nowhere near as simple as life in Andalasia, a place where Giselle is allowed to be naïve and trusting.

As far as Prince Edward is concerned, he follows Giselle into Manhattan and begins his heroic search. He’s just as naïve about our world–he mistakes a television for a magic mirror and a bus is a foul metal beast, and he believes he can unsheathe his sword at will. He also speaks in typical Prince Charming lingo, his words boastful and one-tracked. And much like Giselle, he, too, will break into song for no apparent reason. He’s accompanied by a Pip, a chipmunk who has lost his Andalasian ability to speak English. Pip constantly tries to warn Edward about Nathaniel (Timothy Spall), Queen Narissa’s sniveling weasel of a henchman. Under the guise of being helpful, he does whatever he can to steer Edward in the wrong direction, and most of the time, he succeeds. Will Edward find Giselle? Will they share True Love’s Kiss and live happily ever after? Or is her relationship with Robert is more complex than she would like it to be?

As you can probably tell, this film has fun toying with the classic formula of the Disney fairy tale, the most prominent being “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” So many of its plot devices are spoofed in “Enchanted,” from the love struck young maiden to the wicked queen to the brave prince. Yes, even the poisoned apple is reused, and I think it’s obvious which characters are involved in that regard. But there are other elements of parody at work here, not the least of which is music composed by Alan Menken. Menken is known for scoring a number of Disney’s films during its late twentieth century renaissance: “The Little Mermaid”; “Beauty and the Beast”; “Aladdin”; “Pocahontas”; “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”; “Hercules.” Given this track record, I can’t think of anyone better suited for the job.

And then there’s the final fifteen minutes, which features an impressive computer-animated dragon; a story like this always ends with a climactic fight between the hero and the enemy, and the hero is always supposed to rescue the enemy’s captive. But just who is the hero in “Enchanted”? Who is the enemy’s captive? The answers aren’t all that surprising, but they still make for something entertaining. That’s pretty much the way the entire film works–”Enchanted” is a film that’s perfectly aware of what it wants to accomplish, and it pokes fun at itself while simultaneously paying homage to the formulas Disney films have followed. Thank goodness it has a sense of humor; this kind of storytelling could only work for so long before starting to get silly.

A Outrageous Down Dirty Shame is really no more than all the most familiar Cop movie clichés arranged in an order that makes a barely cohesive record. But it’s all the fun and comic action that occurs in between that really matters! It’s a bit like The Last Boy Scout from a spoof-blaxploitation angle.

Shame (Keenan Ivory Wayans) is a used cop who has been blackballed after a major drugs bust went awry, leaving several DEA agents tiresome. He now works as a private detective, taking on suicide missions for peanuts and barely scraping by. His disapproving secretary Peaches (a very comical and very, very microscopic Jada Pinkett) wants him to rep his act together but he’s too busy wallowing in self-pity.

His musty pal from the DEA shows up and offers him a side mission to back rep succor at the Drug Kingpin who ruined his career. And so, with only a few clues, Shame begins his search and soon all roads lead to lies and deception. Like I said, the location is certainly nothing special. But it does have a helluva lot of laughs and decent action.

The one thing I can complain of is that the production earn is kind of dated now. Action films have evolved so remarkable in the past decade that watching ALDDS 12 years on can be a bit distracting. Wayans (who also directs as well as writing and starring) too often shoots non-actions scenes like a sitcom and his light-hearted editing may encourage remind you that this totally AIN’T a serious film but it’s a dinky TV-ish if you know what I mean.

If you salvage ALDDS for cheap somewhere or if it’s showing on TV then don’t con yourself out of a fun movie. High art is not what this film aims to be.

The DVD has a slightly soft 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer with a Dolby 5.1 sound perform. There are zero extras.

Keenan plays a down and out PI named Shame, with his wanna be PI Assistant Peaches (played by Jada Pinkett) . Shame finds out the savor of his life is aid in town and does what he can to do her. Peaches wants Shame to discover her, and does everything to obtain him to do so. The movie is fun, filled with action, and will have you laughing in some parts. I Admire this movie!!!

The animation here is first rate and the entire thing is shot like a live-action film with some amazing long shots, tall theatrical panning and even at one point, during Quasimodo’s song “Out There” a realistic camera flare (I did a double pick the first time I saw it!) Hunchback is filled with all sorts of immense “tricks” like this. Lighting effects here are nothing short of shapely – often subtle they sometimes change in an instant dramatically altering the mood of the portion. Frodo’s demonic song “Hellfire” is perhaps one the most wrong and terrifying moments to emerge from Disney and the animators let loose.

The prologue to the movie alone is a minor masterpiece and, like Beauty and the Beast, marvelously prepares us for the whirlwind of a yarn to seize state.

The complaints about the singing and dancing gargoyles Victor, Hugo and Laverne, are simply wrongheaded. I read the Hugo classic too, and know they’re not in there. What the complainants fail to realize is these gargoyles live only in Quasimodo’s imagination. He invented these companions to ease an otherwise tortured, lonely, friendless life. The culmination of all of this becomes sure in the spectacular song “A guy like you” which finishes with pigeons flying and hearts and banners and ribbons and Quasimodo being renowned and then BAM immediately upon the conclusion of the final notes, the room becomes the same gloomy, dank, splintering tower filled with relics, junk and heartbreak. It’s one of the movie’s most shattering effects.

While deserved praise goes to the animators and crew, the deny talent here is, in my plan, Disney’s very best. Tom Hulce goes to the very soul of Quasimodo and gives a performance that is as poignant and shattering as anything he has done (Hulce also happened to be the best Hamlet I’ve ever seen.) Definite lines (”I am a monster, you know”) will ring in my ear forever. Hulce has a handsome content and renders “Out there” with such abandon and vigor it makes my hair stand on slay. In the peaceful “Heaven’s light” (which sequences into a comely shot of the bells frantically ringing the opening theme), Hulce brings a fragility to such lines as “no face as horrid as my face, was ever meant for Heaven’s light” that only a heart of stone would not be moved. Switching from pathos to rage, Hulce lets us feel the hidden rage and disaster that this character also possesses. It is a truly mighty performance.

Demi Moore, Kevin Kline, Tony Jay, Paul Kandel – and the rest of the cast all sound at the top of their game creating incredible and colorful characters.

Alan Menkin and Stephen Schwartz derive to the heart of the matter with salvage and songs – a sound – that are as integral a fraction of the telling of this fable as the animation and voices.

Hunchback is a miracle of a movie!

It would not be hard to search for a more difficult sage line for Disney to adapt on veil than Victor Hugo’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, but that doesn’t mean it was a hotfoot in the park either. Not only is there the conundrum of how to obtain Quasimodo correct to his character and at the same time not so plain in appearance as to frighten off youngsters, but how will Victor Hugo’s shadowy commentary of 15th Century Parisian life, capital punishment and religious bigotry be accommodated? What of Claude Frollo’s lascivious desires for Esmerelda and wanton acts upon Quasimodo and gypsies? And that ending…a bit of a downer don’t you deem? Well, contain it or not, Disney stays honest to each of these facets of the unusual…with the exception of the tragic conclusion, of course.

Talking gargoyles aside, the film really does not do enough to accommodate young viewers (and perhaps it was a mistake to market this as a kid’s movie, but you got to sell those Burger King toys somehow!) . The villain (Frollo) is among the most base characters ever portrayed in a Disney movie, and unlike Jafar (”Alladin”) or Hades (”Hercules”), there is nothing droll about him. On the other hand, the animators went a microscopic overboard with Quasimodo, who kinda looks like a red-headed Chris Farley. And Phoebus has the personality of Al Gore…if he were any more wooden you’d have to check him for termites. Also, some very consuming characters from the book are regrettably absent. Where’s Pierre Gringoire, Jehan Frollo, and Sister Gudule? Peaceful, the animation is breathtaking, and the finale is nearly flawless…preferred to novel version if you’re a sentimental fan of glad endings.

The movie contains a few hilarious subliminal references, as when Quasimodo (Tom Hulce) is dressed up briefly as Amadeus. The music is extraordinary and supports the film’s most compelling scenes: Esmerelda singing “God Encourage The Outcasts” while taking sanctuary in the cathedral, the counterpoint of Quasimodo’s “Heaven’s Light” to Frollo’s “Hell Fire,” and the heart-pumping find late the finale. Probably would have been given a PG rating if not for Eisner’s influence over MPAA.

Talking gargoyles aside, the film really does not do enough to accommodate young viewers (and perhaps it was a mistake to market this as a kid’s movie, but you got to sell those Burger King toys somehow!) . The villain (Frollo) is among the most infamous characters ever portrayed in a Disney movie, and unlike Jafar (”Alladin”) or Hades (”Hercules”), there is nothing funny about him. On the other hand, the animators went a tiny overboard with Quasimodo, who kinda looks like a red-headed Chris Farley. And Phoebus has the personality of Al Gore…if he were any more wooden you’d have to check him for termites. Also, some very curious characters from the book are regrettably absent. Where’s Pierre Gringoire, Jehan Frollo, and Sister Gudule? Calm, the animation is breathtaking, and the finale is nearly flawless…preferred to current version if you’re a sentimental fan of blissful endings.

The movie contains a few hilarious subliminal references, as when Quasimodo (Tom Hulce) is dressed up briefly as Amadeus. The music is unbelievable and supports the film’s most compelling scenes: Esmerelda singing “God Support The Outcasts” while taking sanctuary in the cathedral, the counterpoint of Quasimodo’s “Heaven’s Light” to Frollo’s “Hell Fire,” and the heart-pumping rep tedious the finale. Probably would have been given a PG rating if not for Eisner’s influence over MPAA.

I’m not normally a sizable fan of collections or boxed sets … preferring to rob each feature individually. Many times a collection has one or two superior titles and the rest is filler.

So why am I going against the grain here and giving this a superb rating? Especially since I haven’t seen “The Golden Years” yet?

Because two of the included features are worth the imprint of the station. “The Stand” is arguably the best SK unique and probably one of the closest (to the fresh) transfers to the TV mask. The set hinges on a biological warfare mishap in which most of the human speed is wiped out by “Captain Trips”, a.k.a. the superflu. In the aftermath, two groups beget, one following Mother Abigail as the disciples of the faithful; and one group following the “Walking Dude” as a representative of the darker powers (hell is never mentioned although the parallel is tedious enough) . Character development is well done, although not as complete as in the recent (go figure) and is primarily restricted to Mother Abigail’s group. It is, however, more than we usually find in a original to movie transfer. The tale, while four hours long, needs every microscopic to guide us on what makes each person tick … and it does this extremely well. Fright scenes, Stephan King style, are abundantly exhibit and are well done cinematically. King has a gift of taking ordinary circumstances and twisting them into uncommon, terrible nightmares.

The second film, “The Langoliers”, is cast in more of a sci-fi vein; albeit with the usual SK treatment of uncovering the darker side of human nature. The myth revolves around a typical airline flight from Los Angels to Boston which literally flies `out of time’ and `loses’ everyone who was not asleep at the time of the event. Satisfactory thing there was a pilot napping as a passenger, eh?

What happens to the light in a room when you turn off the switch? This movie explores that seek information from. What DOES happen to the past? According to one of the character’s father (Craig Toomey), it is eaten by the langoliers …. Beings which indulge in the slothful and useless in the world. As the plane flies along and eventually lands, we study that the plod of the past winds down and eventually stops. Matches don’t light or will only fizzle, fuel does not burn and beer is flat straight out of the bottle. Craig was always threatened by his “go getter” of a father that indolent, useless boys are eaten by the langoliers. Now the threat comes to life for the passengers from the plane as the munching sound gets closer and closer. Again, this is a very absorbing film well worth watching.

Going by the reviews of others, “The Golden Years” falls flat. Haven’t seen this one for myself, so I’ll have to pass on judgement. Read the other reviews and acquire your fill determination.

Bottom line is that for a reasonable impress, there are at least two SK winners – and possibly a third (reviews are, after all, objective opinions) . I would say that this is a worthwhile buy and will provide hours of entertainment.

As word to the wise – “The Langoliers” is probably not a movie for younger kids unless you want to quit up with them for several sleepless nights. Younger ones probably won’t understand “The Stand”, but some of the scenes may shock and horror them. You might want to conception these yourself first before letting your kids sit in on the viewing.

I Appreciate The Stand! It’s about time they started making the DVD again. The Langoliers is a agreeable movie too. I didn’t care too considerable for Golden Years, it was okay though. This residence is a very generous value though! The Langoliers is on one disk, The Stand is on two disks (powerful better than the 4 VHS tapes it took), and Golden Years is on two disks. I highly recommend this spot, especially for Stephen King fans!
